Who am I?
Hello there!
I am Lucio “Cio” Oliveira, a multidisciplinary designer and instructional design specialist who has contributed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) community since 2011. With more than a decade of experience across higher education, instructional support, and learning innovation, I bring a rare blend of visual artistry, technical expertise, and pedagogical strategy to every project I lead.
Since 2021, I have served as an Instructional Design Specialist in the Office of Learning Technologies, collaborating with faculty across disciplines to design, develop, and enhance online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses. My work focuses on creating engaging, accessible learning experiences grounded in evidence-based instructional practices. I have supported instructors in integrating learning technologies that strengthen student engagement, improve course navigation, and elevate assessment strategies. By bridging instructional strategy and technical design, I ensure that learning environments are intuitive, cohesive, and impactful.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and a Master of Science in Instructional Design and Development from UAB. This combination of visual arts and instructional design allows me to merge creativity with structure—applying strong aesthetic principles alongside research-supported learning methodologies.
As an artist, illustrator, painter, and graphic designer, I bring a refined visual sensibility to my instructional work. I design customized branded course homepages, guide documents, templates, multimedia assets, and interactive Storyline activities that enhance clarity, usability, and learner motivation. My design approach is intentional: every visual element serves a pedagogical purpose. Above all, I am committed to a student-centered philosophy.
My focus is on creating inclusive, interactive, and supportive learning environments that anticipate students’ needs and remove barriers to success. Through thoughtful design, faculty partnerships, and responsive problem-solving, I consistently work to improve engagement and strengthen learning outcomes in meaningful, lasting ways.
As a graphic designer, I believe visual communication is both a craft and a responsibility. I approach every design with intention—shaping color, typography, composition, and motion to deliver messages with clarity, emotional resonance, and visual pleasure. My work balances aesthetic refinement with functional purpose, ensuring each visual element guides attention, supports comprehension, and elevates the audience experience. Whether developing branded identities, posters, ads, templates, or video assets, I strive to create designs that communicate meaningfully, engage authentically, and invite the audience into intuitive, inspiring, and human-centered experiences.
